Richard W - A unique experience on a historic railway.

This railway is left from sugar plantation days. The crew work very hard to maintain the tracks and rolling stock, including some vintage diesel powered drive wheel locomotives. Each car has open seating, an attendant, and the entire ride is narrated. Entertainment was provided by local dancers in local festival/Mardi Gras costumes. Along the route you will see how the locals live, their homes, gardens, schools, and other facilities of education and research. It is a fascinating mix of old and new, have's and have not's. However, the people work hard on this excursion and seem happy and are proud of their nation. I learned a great deal about the old sugar plantation system, how small and inefficient it was compared to the more modern industrial versions. It is important to remember that the old system and the citizens now are all from the era of slavery.

So you know what ? I read the reviews before booking this and read of the shaky cars and the breathing in fumes etc etc. those must have been bad days because my trip yesterday was great. We enjoyed it. We went upstairs on the old sugar cane train that’s probably older than my 60+ years. We drove through the island and were educated on the slavery and then the abolishment of slavery. We were then informed that St Kitts and Nevis were the smallest independent countries having sought independence from the Uk. Good on them. So there is hope for the Scottish then. Still work to do on tourism but in poor countries such as this they will learn and embrace tourism the more they learn. Loved it. If you get a chance you will love it. And no there were no fumes and yes the carriages move from side to side. The train line has been there for a long long time. Good on them for using it to their advantage. Oh did I say you also get plenty of rum punch onboard ?
