Belize is a country rich in cultural diversity, which is vibrantly expressed through its many festivals and events throughout the year. Here are some key events that showcase Belizean culture and provide visitors with a unique and memorable experience:

  1. Belize Independence Day – Celebrated on September 21, this national holiday marks Belize’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. The festivities include parades, concerts, fireworks, and patriotic displays in every town and city, with Belize City hosting the largest celebrations. It’s a great time to experience Belizean pride and joy.

  2. Lobster Festivals – Held in June and July, these festivals celebrate the opening of the lobster season in Belize. The most popular ones take place in the beach towns of San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia. Visitors can enjoy a variety of lobster dishes, from grilled lobster to lobster ceviche, alongside music, dance, and other cultural performances.

  3. La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge – This annual canoe race takes place in March and is one of the most challenging river races in Belize. Stretching over four days and covering 180 miles of the Belize River, the event attracts paddlers from around the world and is a significant cultural and sporting event.

  4. Garifuna Settlement Day – Celebrated on November 19, this important holiday commemorates the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize in 1832. The celebrations include live drumming, dancing, and parades, particularly vibrant in towns like Dangriga, Hopkins, and Punta Gorda, where the Garifuna culture is strong.

San Pedro Carnival – In the week leading up to Lent, San Pedro on Ambergris Caye hosts a colorful and festive carnival known for its unique street painting activities, where people throw and smear paint on each other. There are also traditional comparsas (dance groups) that perform in the streets, making for a lively and fun atmosphere.
